The Equity of Poetry

While unread on the page,
or en route to your ear,
all poems are silly,
every poet a sage –
for poems work only when heard or when read.

They make strings of good sense,
or things from the heart,
or else they don’t work –
and the poet has made
mere marks on paper or sounds in your head.
