Ars poetica

Rhymes with Rushmore

Poets like Waldo, Emily, and Walt address boundless Nature,
to exalt what of life has been gleaned since ancient times,
when earth seemed flat as a cell phone screen,
before round became known as the shape of creation, and

What of life prefers the insides, too, and honors silence
in rooms known to few, but so wholly occupied that it’d be
wrong to squeeze in more people, and

What of life swarms the unleashed mind of one wholly
smitten by an unknowable mortal, while devoted, too,
to those mortally wounded in our first fratricide.

Even though the only thing poetry makes happen is unseen
smiles in unseen minds, that’s quite enough. So, let’s chisel
the likenesses of those good role models right here, and now!
