Ars poetica

The meteoric rise in the academic sanctioning of poets since the 1970s has made "ars poetica" one of the things never far from my mind.

Meditation on the Counter-revolutionary Nature of Laureateships

If poets were like birds
they could fly, but poets
are grounded by gratitude,

A force they’re no more free
to escape than Chimborazo
is free to escape her altitude.

But, a laureateship could turn
a would-be warbler into a parrot –
a bird with an awkward attitude.
