Ars poetica

The meteoric rise in the academic sanctioning of poets since the 1970s has made "ars poetica" one of the things never far from my mind.

If it’s Bad for Metaphor, it’s Bad for Politics

Artificial Intelligence would’ve made Marianne Moore
leave home; wooda reduced Tea Ess Eliot to tears.

Plutarch said a stupid and ungrateful forgetfulness breaks
the unity of life because it cuts yesterday away from today,
as if it were something different; tomorrow is excised, too.

Plutarch wrote that the unity of life is produced by weaving the past
into the present. Unless today carries enough of yesterday,
we’ll be unable to bear the weight of tomorrows full of sorrow.

Because politics has no memory, it makes empty promises of our tomorrows
because it runs on private dollars, instead of common sense.
