Ars poetica

The meteoric rise in the academic sanctioning of poets since the 1970s has made "ars poetica" one of the things never far from my mind.

Art Matters, Entertainment Counts

Tinsel Town crowns her own, according to Q score
and the latest gossip from the Big Apple back East,
the city that never sleeps, but rests between the Hub
and the City of Brotherly Love. Whatever it takes to put
fannies in seats, to sell out the house, qualifies as
entertainemnt, with eyes locked to the bottom line.

Art aims high as stars in the sky, made by artists high
on their own supply, a store of natural bounty found within,
forever refreshed from without, by way of eyes that see color,
shape, and motion, by way of ears that hear music, cries,
and laughter; minds within skulls, with holes for noses
ever alert for the news: “Ars longa, vita brevis.”

Or, says the movies’ favorite Marx, Groucho:
“Time flies like an arrow; but fruit flies like a banana.”
