What Made America Grifter Accessible?
By Dave Read, Lenox, MA, November 20, 2025 – As a product of the Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 is the latest manifestation of a political movement that bore its first public fruit in 1952, when Richard M. Nixon was grafted onto the presidential candidacy of Dwight D. Eisenhower. (Project 2025 is the scheme by which America’s social infrastructure is being gutted by the phony king from Queens.)
Graduate of Whittier College in his home state of California and of Duke law school in North Carolina, the former Navy Commander balanced the ticket headed by a West Point alumnus, former Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces, and recent president of Columbia University.
Besides the necessary political balance achieved by adding Navy to Army, west coast to east, ordinary schools to Ivy League, when Tricky Dick is paired with heroic Ike, villainy dilutes virtuousness.
Nixon displayed his mastery at tricking the public into accepting the everyman persona that hides his Machiavellian character six weeks before the 1952 election, with his infamous Checkers speech.
A strong endorsement from Eisenhower would have made the speech unnecessary, but rather than spend his own political capital on a man he had no personal affection for, the General made Nixon defend himself. That he dodged the bullet of petty scandal, by hiding behind his wife, his daughters, and their pet Checkers, says more for the gullibility than for the good judgment of American voters.
That his current Republican successor has been elected twice since the airing of the Billy Bush tape, not to mention a few other high crimes and misdemeanors, shows the American electorate now careening down hill at reckless speed.
World class mastery of deceit
After losing the 1962 California gubernatorial election, after losing the 1960 presidential election, Nixon outdid the Checkers speech with the “you won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore” speech, which pretended to signal his resignation from office-seeking. Turns out to have been just another item in the Long Con. It gave him cover to prepare his 1968 masterpiece, his “peace with honor” speech that added six years of senseless slaughter to the war in Vietnam.
We’ll have Tricky Dick Nixon’s legacy to kick around until the Republican party purges itself of it, or we liberate ourselves, and the world, from the unpardonable Republican party.
Tricky Dick commissioned the drafting of the Powell Memo in 1971, which begat the Heritage Foundation in 1973, which begat the Federalist Society in 1982. Biblical begats are meant to remind readers of the Book of Genesis, because the problem that confronts third century America is of Biblical proportions.
Fifty years ago, Watergate exposed a cancer on Nixon’s presidency. Instead of excising it then, and delivering the malefactor-in-chief up to Justice, he was pardoned. Except for losing his license to practice law in New York, Nixon walked away from his criminal political career utterly unpunished, and thus became Trump’s role model.
What has kept Trump in the now-gilded Oval Office and out of the prison cell he so richly deserves, is a Supreme Court that is the moral and intellectual antithesis of the Court that voted 9-0 in United States v. Nixon.
The current court includes a majority that are converts to the sham religion of Originalism, whose John the Baptist was Judge Robert Bork, and whose high priests claim to read the minds of the dead authors of the Constitution. Originalism is modeled on Roman Catholicism’s doctrine of Papal Infallibility. It asserts the truth to be a thing uttered long ago, which must be discerned and interpreted by disciples sworn to the Federalist gospel of Originalism.
And so, the nation established largely by refugees from state-imposed conformity to the demands of religiously fickle sovereigns, is this close to failing its calling to be “the last best hope of mankind,” in the haunting language of Abraham Lincoln. Once proudly claimed by Republicans as the father of their party, they now have shown themselves to be all-in with the slave power that made him a martyr.
Champion segregationist Strom Thurmond is the rotten apple who spoiled the Republican barrel in 1964. His defection from the Democratic to the Republican Senate caucus inaugurated the Southern Strategy, revived Tricky Dick, and Made American Grifter Accessible.
