Whiff of Lilac

The first whiff of lilac,
regardless the number of winters
behind it, always sends me back to boyhood,

Where it assumes an aroma of innocence,
with a faint twinge of guilt attached,
because then, lilacs were added to

Bouquets of purloined daffodils, then
placed on altars of devotion to the blessed
mother of Jesus, the reigning queen of May.
