Portrait of a Pebble

The shape of a flattened egg.
Cold; I know without putting
myself in danger
by stooping to
touch it on the slimey
rock. Grey, with a darker spot which records
for a time, like a newsreel, the effect of that
wave on this pebble. Also, a countless crowd of
similar pebbles otherwise marked or not, by that
wave and not only that wave.
